Beer StylesUnderstanding Gluten in Beer and the Rise of ‘Sunrise’

May 14, 2024by Eight

Beer has been a staple of human culture, cherished from the time of ancient monks to today’s global appreciation. However, for many, particularly the hundreds of thousands in the UK with gluten sensitivities, traditional beer can pose significant health risks.

Today we explore the typical gluten content in beer and celebrate the exciting new gluten-free options available, spearheaded by our own ‘Sunrise’ IPA.

Does Beer Contain Gluten?

Yes, traditionally, most beers include gluten as they are brewed from grains such as barley, wheat, and rye—essential components alongside water, hops, and yeast. Gluten, a protein found in these grains, can trigger health issues ranging from digestive discomfort to severe complications for those with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease, affecting about 1 in 100 people in the UK.

Although most beers don’t contain wheat, this doesn’t mean they are gluten-free, as they will likely still contain malted barley in the recipe.

So recognizing the need for more inclusive brewing options, recent years have seen a surge in beers crafted to minimize or eliminate gluten. This shift has made it significantly easier for those with gluten intolerance to enjoy great-tasting beer without adverse effects.

Introducing ‘Sunrise’ – Eight Arch Brewery’s Gluten-Free IPA

Our response to the growing demand for inclusive beer options is ‘Sunrise,’ a session IPA that is entirely gluten-free. Brewed innovatively to avoid gluten while maximizing flavor, ‘Sunrise‘ bursting with hoppy aromas of ripe stone fruit from El Dorado & Citra with a refreshing balanced bitterness. making it a perfect choice for any beer lover, regardless of dietary restrictions.

Gluten in ‘Sunrise’

Our brewing process for ‘Sunrise‘ ensures that it contains less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten, meeting UK standards for gluten-free labeling. This meticulous process allows us to offer ‘Sunrise‘ as a safe choice for those with coeliac disease or anyone looking to reduce their gluten intake without sacrificing taste.
